Der BMW 1800 TI/SA - Renntourenwagen damals und heute.

The BMW 1800 TI / SA racing saloon 1965 and today

In 1965...

...the  BMW 1800 TI racing-saloon was homogolated with 1000kg and the engine developed 158 to 165 hp at 6.500 revs., due to the FIA-homologation which allowed only the 324 degree camshaft with 11 mm valvelift.
Today in FIA-Historic Championship races the camshaft profiles are free. This in connection with a lot of hard work on the whole engine and a compression ration of more than 11 : 1 provides today a power of about 190 hp at 8000 revs. on the BMW 1800ti engine.
There is not much on the solid running gear of the BMW 1800 ti that is going to provide a handling advantage. Even lowered over its specially manufactured 7 x 15 inch alloys and 5.50 M 15 Dunlops the BMW-four-door looks uncompromisingly upright.
( In the sixties they drove with 6x14 inch steelwheels ).
The McPherson strut front and trailing arm independent rear suspension can receive only very little modification, but with a wide range of modern springs and shockers from Eibach and Bilstein the handling of the BMW is improved to a very high standard, as Rauno Aaltonen confirms:
"When I drove these BMWs in the Sixties they wandered all over the place. Now they do not".
These are the reasons why modern "historic"  BMW 1800 TIs
are so much faster than the originals in 1965 and are lapping nearly as fast as modern racers.

He later had to retire with a broken right rear 6x14 inch steel-wheel while leading the race ahead of the 4,7 litre Mustangs.
In 1965 many cars had problems with the durability of the wider steel-wheels because of the enormous grip of the Dunlop racing tyres.

And we have been there too.......
